The character’s back-story has been subject to change over the years, and is explained in the narrative to be a result of a mental condition causing him to be unable to remember his history. Deadpool’s real name is Wade Wilson, who lost his mother from cancer, and ended growing up with his abusive father. He left his home as a teen and joined the army. Following a brief stint of military service, Wade began his mercenary career while still in his late teens. Accepting assassination jobs only against those whom he felt deserved death, he made a habit of using plastic surgery and technology to take on a new identity whenever he failed an assignment. He learned later on that he had contracted inoperable brain cancer, which made him give up on life and refused his chemo treatments, not wishing to prolong things.

He soon joined the Weapon X program after being given hope of getting rid of his cancer. This is where he gets his healing powers. His cancer was arrested temporarily by the healing factor implanted to him that was derived from another agent from Weapon X, the mutant Wolverine.

During one mission, Wilson killed his teammate, resulting in him being rejected from the Weapon X program. He was sent to the Hospice, a government facility where failed operatives are treated. Unknown to the government, the Hospice’s patients are subjected to experimentation by Doctor Killebrew and his attendant Ajax. The patients often place bets on how long the subjects would live which they called the “deadpool”. Wilson was one of the subjects to be tortured in Killebrew’s experiments.

He was subsequently killed by Ajax after killing a fellow patient. His heart was torn out and left for dead, but Wilson’s thirst for vengeance was so strong that his healing factor brought him back to life and healed his heart, although without curing his scars. This left him with a disfigured face that can be tough to stomach for anyone who sees it. Wilson then escaped the room and killed the guards. Ajax was shot two times in the chest with an automatic rifle. This is when he adopted the name Deadpool for himself and escaped from the Hospice together with his fellow patients.

Deadpool eventually returns to being a mercenary thereafter. His accelerated healing powers and unpredictability make him a tough opponent to beat. He’s adept at using several weapons, but most of the time he will be seen with his dual katanas, a gun, a knife, or a large hammer that he stores in a magic satchel that has what seems like an infinite storage capacity. He also makes use of a teleportation device to trick or evade enemies in an instant.

What makes Deadpool different from the other heroes from the comics is that he is aware of his existence as a fictional comic book character. This often leads to jokes and gags about the issues he’s in, constantly breaking the fourth wall to talk to the readers. He is very talkative in nature, hence receiving the title of the “Merc with a Mouth”. Due to his mental disorder, he is also presented to have multiple personalities which he talks to for advice.

Even though he’s crazy, he’s had several friends and allies that help him in his missions. Weasel is his resident arms dealer and friend. Bob, Agent of Hydra is his sidekick, although he usually runs more than he helps out. Though Deadpool is an assassin, he’s had several team-ups with the big superhero squads such as the Avengers and the X-Men. He has also teamed up with Domino, Cable, Wolverine, and Taskmaster on several occasions. Unbeknownst to some, Deadpool has had a couple of lovers even after his Weapon X procedure. Copycat was his girlfriend for some time, whom he met way before the procedure. Lady Death, the manifestation of death itself, also fell in love with Deadpool, but Thanos, being jealous of Wade cursed him with immortality so he would never see Death ever again.

Because of his job, Deadpool has had plenty of run-ins with villains. He’s battled against the worst of the worst. There’s Thanos, Dr. Bong, Black Tom Cassidy, Norman Osborn, Butler, Loki, and even Carnage. He also faced an evil version of himself called Evil Deadpool, which was an amalgam of different parts of Deadpools from alternate realities sown together in one body.

And that’s it for this article. Originally a copy of the Teen Titans villain “Deathstroke” and created by Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld, Deadpool has since evolved into a whole new character. There’s much to learn about Deadpool, but these are the basics that you should know before hitting the theaters in February for the upcoming Deadpool movie.
