The 1940s was a period of instability. With the Great Depression and the world in turmoil over World War 2, chaos, violence, and poverty were abound. In spite of this (or perhaps because of this), the 40's remain an important part of history, with a distinct style and public figures. Pin-up culture flourished and women became more independent as many started to become a part of the working force, taking over men's jobs after men were sent off to war.
