Ways to Give Back this Holiday Season

Now that the holidays are in full swing, we know everyone’s busy looking up new (or old) recipes, decorating, shopping for gifts, and making their own holiday wish lists. With so many things to do, it’s hard to imagine that anyone would have the time or money to give back. Fortunately, we’ve come up with some great free and easy ways to give back this year!

Donating Old Things

Since you and your family will probably be receiving new gifts this year, why not make some room by getting rid of things you no longer need or use? Did you know that some charities will do pickups right from your home? You can visit DonationTown.com to find out what local charities will pick up from you. Even if there aren’t any places nearby, donating is as easy as a quick drop off at your local charity. Keep in mind that you don’t always have to donate to an organization. Maybe you have friends, families, or neighbors that may benefit from your kids’ old books, toys, or clothes that they no longer need or want.

Donate by Browsing

Many companies or charities will make donations if you just visit their websites. You spend all your time online anyway; why not make it charitable while you’re at it? The Breast cancer site will help give a woman a free mammogram if you simply click on their button. Also, FreeRice.com will donate rice to help end hunger when you play a game on their website.

Dog Walking

If you’re already an active person or if you already have a dog that you take on walks regularly, then why not spread the love by volunteering to walk dogs at your local animal shelter? This way, you’ll still get in yours and your pooch’s daily cardio while helping the community as well.

Forgoing the Gifts

This year, instead of receiving gifts from your loved ones, ask them to instead donate that money to charity of your (or their) choice.

Use Your Plastic for a Cause

Some banks will offer a percentage of your debit or credit card purchases to charitable causes. If you don’t want to sign up for a new card, you can always sign up for SwipeGood, which is a company that will round up your purchases to the nearest dollar amount and then donate the difference to a charity of your choosing.

There are so many ways to give back to your community. With Christmas only a couple days away, it’s a good time to remember to not only be thankful for what we have, but also think about others and what we can do to give them something to be celebrate as well.
