COVID-19-Appropriate Costumes
During these unsettling times, with the Corona Virus still a huge concern, Halloween events are tricky to navigate. Some events are being changed to drive-through experiences, virtual events, or being cancelled altogether. Some areas are cancelling trick-or-treating while others are limited or highly suggesting not to go out this year. Whatever your plans are this year, you may still want to dress up, even if you’re having a socially distant Halloween. One of the best ways to stay safe is to wear a mask. However, a lot of people may be struggling to find costumes to wear during this pandemic. So in order to both dress up and stay safe, we came up with some costume ideas to enjoy a safer Halloween in costume! Here are our COVID-19-Appropriate costumes.
Mouth-Covering Costumes
These first costumes all feature people who wear mouth coverings so it will make perfect sense to be wearing your mask with your costume.
Doctors and Nurses
Dressing up as anyone in the medical field is definitely the most obvious and easier option. They don’t look out of place in a face mask and they’re definitely the heroes of this pandemic.

Ninjas
Ninja costumes are great for this year because, as a deadly assassin, you’ll need to hide your identity and you can also protect yourself from the virus at the same time. Keep in mind that while many ninja costumes include a face mask, they may be too thin so you can just wear a color-coordinated mask of your own just to be safe.

Cowboys wear bandannas around their necks to they can easily cover their face to protect from the dust in the Wild, Wild West. What’s great as that it can double as protection from COVID-19 as well! While not all cowboy costumes include a bandanna, it would be easy to find a bandanna in any color or design of your choice to complete your Western look.

A handkerchief around the neck is a key part of a train conductor’s look. If your little one is obsessed with trains as mine if, he’s going to love dressing up as a train conductor and he’ll probably be excited to wear a handkerchief mask just like a real train conductor!

Face-Covering Costumes
Here, we’re moving onto costume that cover the entire face. Because these face coverings may be made out of thin material, we suggest that you still wear your face mask underneath it but it will still be disguised behind the face covering.

A Grim Reaper costume is definitely appropriate for the Halloween season. Most Grim Reaper costumes will feature a thin face covering that you can see through or a ghost or skeletal mask. And if it doesn’t, wearing a black mask to complete the look will only add to the spooky and mysterious nature of your costume.

Other Options
Get creative and make your own mask to complete your costume! Take a cue from Alia’s DIY Costume Face Mask blog post and paint your own mask to go with your look. You can paint a cute animal nose and mouth to go with your animal costume, a cartoon mouth, or anything else.
Another option you have is to pick a mask in a coordinating color or pattern to get the right look to complete your costume.
And finally, your mask doesn’t even have to go with your costume or be disguised at all. Whatever you’re dressing up as, that character would want to stay protected from the Corona Virus too. Even Sailor Mars wore a mask when she had to fight the bad guys while she was sick. As long as you wear a mask, all costumes can be COVID-19-appropriate costumes. The most important thing is that you take precautions, stay safe, and have fun!
