Renaissance Party Series: Knights in Training

Last week, we shared a Renaissance party theme for girls. Today we want to share one that’s perfect for rugged and rowdy boys. Medieval knights are one of the most recognizable figures of the Old World. Known for their courage and strength, knights are known to be heroes, and what boy doesn’t want to be a hero? That’s why today’s theme is “Knights in Training.” This costume party theme is great for a boy’s birthday party, especially among those who love the Renaissance period.

Begin by inviting guests to attend in their best knight’s uniform (here). Once they arrive at the party, they can design their own coat of arms and grab a play sword before all the “training” begins! This can serve as both a fun arts and crafts activity as well as a fun take-home for the kids.

Onto the real fun and games, a knight, (which can be a hired actor or a friend dressed in costume), will teach all the kids how to become a knight themselves! You can begin by reciting a code of chivalry, (you can find examples online), then go over some sword fighting techniques. If you’re able to get your hands on a backyard archery kit, the kids can practice their skills. You can teach the knights how to address a lady and can defeat a dragon with a dragon as the piñata. Lastly, the kids can put all their skills to the test when a band of scurvy pirates, (again actors or willing friends), attack. Once the kids have proven their worth, you can end the party with a knighting ceremony.

For the food, you can serve food reminiscent of the Renaissance times like roasted meat, vegetables and a roll. If you want to make it even more fun, the kids can eat with their hands! Just be sure that they’ve cleaned off after all the other activities.

With these simple party ideas, you can easily throw a knight-themed party in an instant! Do you have a great tip to add to this party theme? If so, share it with us by leaving a comment below!
